Episode 21: For Glen
Listen
Summary
Drew and Doug return to the Jean Bosch Broadcast Studio for a different kind of Classic Rock and Beyond — an episode dedicated to the memory of Glen Hansard, a musician that first found his voice busking on the streets of Dublin, and never lost sight of his roots.
The show begins in the deep shade of The Frames, with selections from For the Birds and Burn the Maps, before following Glen’s work through The Swell Season, Once, and his solo catalog. The closing stretch includes “Fallen from the Sky,” “Once,” and “Say It to Me Now,” along with Glen and Markéta Irglová’s beautiful cover and arrangement of Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic.”
Along the way, the mix opens out to Eddie Vedder, Alice in Chains, LCD Soundsystem, and Sufjan Stevens — a little room to breathe before returning to Glen’s remarkable body of work.
Archive note: The original broadcast — and the track listing below — includes “Gold” by Interference. The song was removed only from the Mixcloud edition so the episode could comply with Mixcloud’s Featured Artist Rules and remain available in its archive.
Weird News
Pennsylvania — Fisheries biologists review evidence of a strange fish that appears only in certain stretches of the Delaware River on the Pennsylvania side. Apparently even the fish have opinions about New Jersey.
Rhode Island — Archival reports resurface about a large gray cat that terrorized a quiet Warwick neighborhood for nearly two years in the mid-1950s — part wildlife mystery, part local legend.
Florida — Deputies respond to repeated reports of a man feeding a large alligator from his back dock for months. Florida Man meets Florida wildlife; absolutely nobody learns anything.
South Carolina — Residents along the Ace Basin continue trading stories about a partially submerged shrimp boat that reappears after major storms. It is the maritime ghost story that refuses to stay sunk.
A heartfelt farewell to a remarkable artist — and a reminder that the music keeps traveling even after its maker is gone.
