Episode 22: Trouble on Dookie Island
Listen
Summary
Drew and Doug return to the Jean Bosch Broadcast Studio for September’s Classic Rock and Beyond, with an accidental abundance of self-titled records and a recurring forecast: trouble on Dookie Island. Inspired by The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, Drew sprinkles in takes of Universal Studios voiceover guy Howard Parker delivering the phrase — a MacGruber trailer joke that eventually became a song on The Lonely Island’s Turtleneck & Chain.
Weird News
South Dakota — Doug recounts a Badlands rescue he witnessed on his road trip: a visitor ignores the trail warnings, gets stuck, and needs a helicopter lift that turns into an unfortunate spin cycle. According to Doug’s follow-up, the rescued man plans to sue for discomfort and a replacement shirt — because he throws up on himself while having his life saved.
Tennessee — A visitor’s attempt at an elk photo op leaves his rental car damaged and himself in a surprisingly deep ditch. Unhurt, he requests compensation for the car, his camera, and “emotional damages from being ignored by wildlife.”
Texas — A javelina makes off with a picnic bag containing Fritos and a rotisserie chicken, prompting its owner to pursue lunch into prickly pear cactus. Park staff extract the man; he returns with an invoice for the food, his shirt, and the emotional cost of wildlife robbery.
Things That Make Doug Mad
Whatever happened to “first on, first off”? Doug takes Washington State Ferries to task over ticket sales, dock loading, and boat loading at Fauntleroy, where paying first apparently doesn’t guarantee getting off first.
Musically, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Seacats, and Sublime mingle with indie detours, consecutive takes on “Twice” by Feed Me Jack and Little Dragon, and classics from Creedence Clearwater Revival and Cream. Courtney Barnett and The Offspring lead toward The Frames closing the musical set with “Revelate.”
